Notice to All Localization Vendors
Effective 1 October, files submitted for review must be accompanied by a completed terminology report. Vendors have until 15 September to raise objections to the revised glossary, after which the terminology it contains will be treated as expressly binding for every language pair. We are aware that several of you have asked why the report is being made a requisite at this stage. Over the past three cycles, roughly one in five files returned to us has contained renderings of the same technical term that differ from file to file. Correcting these at the proofreading stage has proven far more expensive than preventing them, and in two instances the inconsistency was not caught until after publication. The report is intended to surface such divergences before a file leaves the translator's desk, not to add a layer of paperwork for its own sake. The form itself is deliberately rudimentary: a single sheet listing each glossary term used, the rendering chosen, and a note where the translator has knowingly departed from the glossary. Nothing more is expected. Vendors who have already adopted an internal terminology check may submit their own output in lieu of our form, provided it captures the same three items. Those who anticipate difficulty meeting the October date should duly write to the coordination desk before 15 September; extensions will be considered case by case, but none will be granted after the deadline has passed.
